Is this a Dress or Coat?This is a cold-weather dress, NOT a coat even though it visually mimics a duster.The hidden button placket goes from top to bottom. That many buttons would be too difficult to deal with every time you put on/took off (as a coat), nor does it have the thickness a coat would have.
Style / Cut:Features a mandarin / funnel collar (very late 70s, early 80s!). Hidden button placket for a sleek, uninterrupted front (classic Chloé detail at the time). Dropped shoulders and relaxed sleeve volume — another sign of late '70s into '80s design. Cinched waist effect with the wide waistband — gives light shape without sacrificing comfort. Midi to long length, practical and modest (very typical for chic daywear in this era). Soft pleating / gathering below the waist, adding subtle femininity without a full skirt.
Look and Aesthetic:Sophisticated, Parisian chic, Slightly Androgynous. Tailored yet relaxed, a minimalist French interpretation of soft power dressing, perfect for refined day-to-night transitions. Could be worn as a high-powered office dress, or dressed up with boots and jewelry. Feels very “Annie Hall”-era but even sleeker (think: Paris instead of New York).
Era / Dating:Based on the labels, construction, and overall style, this dress is mostly likely from the late 1970s to early 1980s. The “Made in France” Chloé label (with Neiman Marcus partnership) and the type of font and Woolmark tag strongly suggest around 1978–1983. This was during a transitional time when Karl Lagerfeld was designing for Chloé (early 70s through mid-80s), and the brand embraced sharp tailoring, luxurious minimalism, and practical yet elegant silhouettes.

Condition: Good Vintage Condition.A rare and collectible piece of Chloé fashion history. Nosize tag; sizing is a best estimate based on measurements (see photos and full description for measurements). There is a light colored line/fabric blemish on the back, and some of the buttons show wear, and one button (toward the bottom) has been replaced with a slightly different style ofbutton (but it is covered by the placket). The inside-lining at both shoulder hems has been opened, I think to remove what was likely much bulkier shoulder pads. You can see a white shoulder pad under the lining, where each opening is, but its flat (no bulky shoulder pads remaining). There are interior stains in the armpit areas, on the inside lining (cannot be seen on exterior). One button has been replaced. Its in beautiful shape overall.Please message me if you need additional photos or measurements, as size is estimated. The photos with a gray background are the most accurate representation of the dress color (charcoal gray). But those first photos (with a white background) give you a great look at the form of the dress when worn).
