Dior License

Christian Dior was also an innovative entrepreneur. In fact, he licensed his perfumes and accessories to third-party companies. In particular, the glasses were produced in the 1950s by Tula, a New York company founded by optician Monroe Levoy. Tula glasses were both high-fashion accessories and works of art in engraved metal with enamel and jewellery treatments, available only to a very select group of buyers.

Dior Glasses in Optyl

In 1969, German glasses manufacturer Wilhelm Unger, founder of "Optyl International", obtained a license from Dior and revolutionised the manufacture of glasses.

Thanks to his invention, the use of Optyl, a very light thermosetting plastic, he transformed luxury sunglasses into a more accessible accessory for daily wear. The properties of this material also allowed for a wide range of models with broad and original lines, previously unknown colours and delicate gradations of transparent, brown, green and grey that still characterise the elegant and refined style of the Dior brand today.

Already in the mid-1970s, the Dior eyewear collection took the optical world by storm and was continuously expanded until the 1990s. The Monsieur series of the 1980s was the most successful line, featuring elegant designer glasses for men.

In 1996, the license to manufacture Dior glasses was granted to the Safilo Group until 2020.

In April 2017, Christian Dior was acquired by the LVMH Group. Dior has been in the eyewear field for decades, creating one icon after another and establishing itself as a trendsetter. Until 2020, the production of Dior brand glasses was in the hands of the Safilo Group, but with the acquisition of the LVMH Group,

from 2021, production was handed over to Thelios, a company created by the will of the LVMH Group.
